The Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation’s Drakensberg Inclusive Growth Forum drew thought leaders from across Africa, but it was UJ’s Vice-Chancellor who delivered one of the most resonant messages of the event.
Professor Mpedi’s keynote, titled “Migration as a Critical Element of Higher Education in South Africa,” emphasized the need to embrace cross-border academic collaboration and student mobility.
With rising xenophobia and tightening immigration policies, Mpedi argued that universities must resist isolationist trends and instead foster environments of openness and innovation.
He urged policymakers to rethink visa restrictions and funding models that limit international student access, warning that South Africa risks falling behind in global academic competitiveness.
The University of Johannesburg has already begun implementing mobility-friendly policies, including partnerships with institutions across Africa, Europe, and Asia.
Mpedi’s address signals a bold vision for South African higher education, one that sees migration not as a threat, but as a catalyst for growth, diversity, and excellence.
