EFFYC Leaders

The Economic Freedom Fighters Youth Command (EFFYC) at the University of Mpumalanga has successfully intervened to assist students who were left stranded during residence walk-ins at Luhambo Residence.

On Tuesday, several students arrived at the residence expecting to be allocated rooms, only to experience delays in the intake process. Due to understaffing and administrative backlogs, some students were forced to sleep outside overnight while waiting for their accommodation to be finalised.

Following reports of the situation, EFFYC members on campus stepped in and worked closely with residence officials to address the crisis. The student structure assisted in fast-tracking the intake process, ensuring that affected students were prioritised and safely accommodated.

According to EFFYC, the intervention was aimed at protecting students’ dignity and safety, particularly those who had travelled long distances to secure campus housing.

“As of this morning, all affected students have been successfully accommodated and are safely inside their rooms,” the organisation confirmed in a statement.

The incident has once again highlighted ongoing challenges around student accommodation and administrative capacity during peak registration periods. Student leaders have called for improved planning and increased staffing to prevent similar situations in the future.

EFFYC reaffirmed its commitment to standing with students and responding swiftly whenever their welfare is at risk.
