Universities South Africa (USAf) has partnered with the Momentum Group Foundation to roll out a nationwide financial literacy program across all public universities. The initiative aims to equip students with essential money management skills amid rising tuition fees, accommodation costs, and economic uncertainty.
The program builds on a successful pilot at select institutions and will now be integrated into student orientation, career services, and academic support structures. Topics include budgeting, saving, credit management, and understanding student loans. Workshops, online modules, and peer-led sessions will be offered to ensure accessibility and engagement.
USAf CEO Dr. Phethiwe Matutu emphasized that financial literacy is not a luxury but a necessity. “Students are making major financial decisions at a young age. We must empower them to do so wisely”, she said. The program also includes tailored content for first-generation students and those from low-income households.
Momentum Foundation spokesperson Thabo Molefe noted that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to youth empowerment. “We’re not just teaching numbers, we are building confidence and long-term financial resilience”, he said. The foundation will provide funding, training, and digital tools to support implementation.
With student debt and financial stress on the rise, this initiative offers a proactive solution. By embedding financial literacy into the university experience, South Africa takes a meaningful step toward preparing students for life beyond graduation.
