South African Universities Battle for Global Rankings in 2025

South Africa’s top universities are facing increasing challenges in global rankings as research performance declines and competition intensifies. Experts warn that without stronger funding and strategic planning, local institutions may struggle to keep pace.

South African universities have long been recognized for their academic excellence, but recent global rankings reveal a concerning trend. The latest Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) for 2025 shows that only three local universities: University of Cape Town, Wits, and Stellenbosch – have secured spots in the top 500.

While these institutions continue to perform well, nine of the twelve ranked South African universities have dropped in global standings. The University of Cape Town fell four places to 275th, Wits dropped to 292nd, and Stellenbosch University slipped 18 spots to 458th. Experts attribute this decline to reduced research output and intensified competition from well-funded international universities.

Dr. Nadim Mahassen, President of CWUR, highlighted the urgent need for increased investment in higher education. He warned that South Africa risks falling further behind in the global academic landscape if funding and strategic planning are not prioritized.

Despite these challenges, some universities have shown improvement. The University of Pretoria, North-West University, and the University of South Africa (Unisa) have climbed in rankings, demonstrating resilience amid financial constraints.

The decline in rankings has sparked discussions among education leaders and policymakers. Many argue that South African universities need stronger government support to enhance research capabilities and maintain global competitiveness.

International trends also play a role in shaping the rankings. While South African universities struggle, Chinese institutions are rapidly advancing due to substantial government funding. Meanwhile, American universities are facing their own challenges, with reduced federal funding impacting their global standing.

As South Africa navigates these academic shifts, students and faculty remain hopeful that increased investment and innovation will help local universities regain their footing in global rankings.
