Hundreds of students at Stellenbosch University have taken to the streets in protest against the deregistration of students with historical debt. The demonstration, which began on campus, quickly spread as students moved from faculty to faculty, disrupting lectures to raise awareness.
The protest was fueled by concerns over financial exclusion, with many students unable to continue their studies due to outstanding fees. The Student Representative Council (SRC) led the movement, calling for solidarity among students and urging the university to reconsider its policies.
Protesters gathered outside key university buildings, chanting slogans and holding placards demanding fair access to education. Some students expressed frustration, stating that financial barriers prevent many from completing their degrees and securing future employment.
The demonstration also highlighted broader issues within South Africa’s higher education system, including fee blocks and accommodation shortages. Many students believe the current system disproportionately affects those from disadvantaged backgrounds
University officials have acknowledged the concerns raised by students and have committed to reviewing the situation. However, protesters insist that immediate action is needed to prevent further exclusions and ensure equal opportunities for all.
The movement has gained traction on social media, with students sharing their experiences and calling for nationwide support. Many have compared the protests to the #FeesMustFall movement, which previously led to significant changes in university funding policies.
