SASCO confirmed that its Chairperson and Secretary were among the first to arrive at the scene, working alongside officials from the South African National Roads Agency (TRAC) and concerned students who rushed to offer support. Through quick action and coordinated intervention, the student was removed from danger and provided with immediate assistance.

“The student is safe,” SASCO said in its official communication, reassuring the campus community that the situation had been brought under control without loss of life.

The incident has sparked renewed conversations around student mental health, emotional well-being, and the pressures faced by young people in higher education. Student leaders emphasized the importance of solidarity, vigilance, and creating an environment where students feel supported and able to seek help during times of crisis.

“We must continue to prioritise student well-being and support one another,” the statement read.

While details surrounding the student’s identity and the circumstances leading up to the incident have not been disclosed, campus structures and student organisations have urged students to look out for one another and to reach out when they or their peers are struggling.

The University of Mpumalanga community has since commended the decisive response by SASCO leadership and emergency personnel, noting that the outcome could have been very different without their timely intervention.

As institutions of higher learning grapple with growing mental health challenges, today’s incident serves as a reminder of the critical role that peer support, student leadership, and rapid response play in safeguarding lives.
